Sun protective clothing prevents overexposure

Young or old, sun protective clothing will help guard against the damaging effects of over exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays.

In the U.S. we have over three and a half million cases of skin cancer diagnosed every year. Wearing sun clothing as a sun safety measure could very well prevent the overexposure of the sun’s rays and help reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Nobody should ever fear the sun, but instead take some common sense precautions. If you’re going to be exposed for over 20-30 minutes in the mid-day sun, then it’s time to take some sun protection measures. I say 20-30 minutes but a good sign to watch for is when your skin turns a very, very slight pink …that’s enough!

At this point you’ve absorbed all the vitamin D that you are going to and skin damage now begins.

Protective clothing, sun protection hats and all types of sun clothing can prevent your skin from being damaged and reduce your skin cancer risks in areas that still may be exposed, then … of course, use some sunscreen.

Sun safety

Thinking in terms of sun safety is not only something to be thought about when we go to the beach.

Consider all that you may do as you go about your outside daily routines ... in your car, in the yard, walking or jogging or maybe as a landscaper or construction worker.

One friend of mine, who owns a concrete business …in his 40’s ...has severely damaged skin due to so many basal cell carcinomas he’s had all over his face, The treatments have left him with a very rough complexion skin.

This is permanent damage and I don’t think you want that.

Applying some sunscreen as needed and using some sun protective clothing like wide brimmed hats and any other sun clothing will go a long way to give you complete protection from damaging rays.

Choose the proper clothing to guard against overexposure. The closer or tighter the fabric is woven, the more protection you have. Most manufacturers of sun protection clothing provide a UPF label. The higher the number the higher protection you have against overexposure.

If you’re not in the direct sun for long periods of time, you may want to choose a smaller number, allowing your body to take advantage of the vitamin D.

If you are light skinned, red hair, blue eyes or have a history of skin cancer, including in your family, then your skin cancer risks are high and you may want to choose the strongest protection against overexposure to U V rays.

If you spend a lot of time driving, your left arm and left side of your face are at risk of sun damage. For the best sun protection, anyone would be wise to use a combination of sunscreen and sun protective clothing.

Enjoy your life …keep yourself healthy and your skin looking good.

Hi! My name is Nick and I’m 56 yrs. old and this is part of my story. Let me tell you, I was like a lot of people out there and I had no idea that skin cancer was anything bad. I had Basal cell back in 2007, but that was no big deal and it was removed and that was the end of that. No one told me that it was a type of skin cancer (I looked it up on my computer). But still no big deal, it would not kill me.
But I did know the word "Melanoma"....." --by Nick

Bottom Line
The Weather Channel has done well posting this information and photos to help you spot skin cancer, including melanoma.
It can be hard to spot, even for a professional.
The bottom line is to get an expert's opinion about any suspicious mole or lesion on your skin. If necessary, get a second opinion  and/or request a biopsy. it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t put your very life at risk!
